Our Why

One main challenge that the home faces in its rescue and rehabilitation efforts is the issue of drug addiction among the street children. Street children often report that using substances assists them in forgetting their problems, dulling hunger, gaining peer acceptance, feeling warmer, and enduring difficult work.

Many of the children who are rescued are addicted to drugs and this creates a big barrier and challenge to their successful reintegration and socialization.

Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of public rehabilitation centres and rehabilitation costs at the private facilities are unbearable. According to the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), rehab costs can range between Ksh120,000 to Ksh500,000 for a 90-day or 3-month intensive inpatient addiction treatment and drug detox, while outpatient rehabilitation program goes for around Ksh2,500 to 6,000 a day, depending on the complexity of the condition. While the National Health Insurance Cover (NHIF) covers drug abuse disorders up to limits of Ksh60,000 , this is only available to members with active accounts which street children do not have.

Also, rehabilitation of street children needs a holistic, collaborative and sustainable approach for success.

Ebenezer Children’s Home board of management has therefore seen an urgent need to construct a center at the home, to rehabilitate and reform the drug addicted street children before their reintegration.

Construction of the rehabilitation and reformation centre is estimated to cost approximately Ksh 14,293,429. Once complete, the centre will be able to accommodate up to 60 children at a given time.

The center is expected to greatly contribute to the overall success rate of reintegration and resocialization of street children.

Progress So far

Work has began with the construction of a perimeter wall at the proposed site.
